Canfor Corp. said it is closing two sawmills in South Carolina in August.

The Vancouver, British Columbia, lumber company said Thursday it would close the Estill and Darlington mills after a period of persistently weak market conditions and sustained financial loss.

About 290 workers would be affected by the closures, and Canfor's U.S. lumber-production capacity will shrink by 350 million board feet annually.

Canfor is providing severance payments and exploring opportunities for redeployment within its operations, it said.
