TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto attended the 2025 BRICS Summit at the Museum of Modern Art (MAM), Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Sunday, July 6, 2025. President Prabowo's presence marked Indonesia's first participation in the BRICS Summit after becoming a member earlier this year.
In a statement from the Presidential Palace, upon arriving at the VVIP lobby of MAM, President Prabowo was welcomed by a row of honor guards as a form of respect for the attending heads of state. Previously, delegations from other countries had arrived and received similar greetings, starting with Iran, followed by India, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, South Africa, Russia, China, and Ethiopia.
Prabowo was then directed to the main venue of the BRICS Summit and was personally welcomed by Brazilian President Luiz Incio Lula da Silva, the Chair of BRICS for the year 2025. The two leaders were seen shaking hands and warmly embracing each other while having a brief conversation. They also took part in a photo session.
After being welcomed by the President of Brazil, President Prabowo then joined other world leaders in the Leaders' Lounge. This space provided an opportunity for heads of state to greet each other and briefly exchange views on global challenges and other important matters before participating in the main sessions of the BRICS Summit. This year's BRICS Summit had the theme of "Strengthening Global South Cooperation for More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance."
Prabowo also participated in a photo session with all the attending world leaders and delegations. In the photo, President Prabowo was seen standing between the President of the Republic of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, and the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
Next, Prabowo and the other world leaders made their way to the Plenary Room to participate in a restricted session with the theme of "Peace and Security, and Global Governance Reform." In this session, Prabowo was scheduled to present Indonesia's views on the matter. In addition to attending the restricted session, President Prabowo was also scheduled to participate in several other meetings during the two-day BRICS Summit.
