South Korea and the United Kingdom launched the fifth round of talks to upgrade their free trade agreement (FTA) in Seoul from Monday to Friday.

The negotiations aim to strengthen economic ties, expand exports, and stabilize trade amid rising global protectionism and US trade measures, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy said Monday.

The two sides are discussing 16 key areas, including services, investment, digital trade, rules of origin, and government procurement. Over 60 officials from both countries are participating, the release said.

The talks follow the UK's Brexit-driven need to revise earlier EU-aligned agreements. Korea seeks greater flexibility for exporters through eased rules of origin and improved digital trade regulations, it said.
