French Air-Traffic Controllers' Strikes Pose Structural Threat to European Aviation -- Market Talk

0733 GMT - The air-traffic controllers' recurring strikes in France pose a structural threat to European aviation because of the country's central airspace and the lack of protective measures for overflights, Baader Europe says in a research note. The flight cancellations and delays particularly hit low-cost carriers with dense European networks, such as Ryanair, and impose financial burdens on all airlines due to re-routing, compensation and operational headaches, it adds. The two-day strike last week involved 19% of French controllers and caused more than 1,500 flight cancellations, impacting an estimated 300,000 passengers, it says. Baader Europe has a sell rating on the airline sector, with Wizz Air stock as the "worst pick" and easyJet as "best pick." (cristina.gallardo@wsj.com)
