Malaysia minister says unclear why US tariff rate was increased, seeks to balance trade

KUALA LUMPUR, July 9 (Reuters) - Malaysia's Trade Minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz said on Wednesday he did not know why a U.S. tariff on Malaysia was increased from 24% to 25%, adding his country was committed to balancing trade with Washington.

Speaking at a press conference, he said Malaysia's offer to the United States includes purchasing Boeing aircraft for Malaysia Airlines and his country would improve enviornmental protections and is encouraging cross-border data flows. He said Malaysia would not compromise on issues of national sovereignty and was prepared to defend "red lines".
