Communications-services companies rose, but not by as much as the broad market, after a major advertising firm revealed pressures from artificial-intelligence competition.

WPP shares slid after the giant ad agency warned clients were holding back on spending, prompting analysts to warn that AI design capabilities are drawing brands to digital platforms rather than traditional agencies.

Linda Yaccarino said she was stepping down as chief executive of X, capping a tumultuous run atop Elon Musk's social-media company.
