Nidec (TYO:6594) has developed an electric motor made almost entirely with Chinese parts to support Toyota's (TYO:7203) push in China, Bloomberg reported Wednesday, citing CEO Mitsuya Kishida.
The E-axle motor, 99% sourced locally, powers the bZ3X SUV, which launched in March and has sold about 20,000 units, according to the report.
The project aims to cut costs, boost Toyota's competitiveness, and revive Nidec's own fortunes as it restructures amid weak profits. The firm also opened a $100 million Qingdao plant and may sell assets to improve efficiency and shareholder value, the report said.
