TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government is pursuing further negotiations with the United States following the announcement of a 19 percent import tariff on Indonesian products.

Secretary of the Coordinating Ministry for the Economy, Susiwijono Moegiarso, stated that the goal of these discussions is to achieve a 0 percent tariff for several key Indonesian commodities.

Susiwijono acknowledged that while U.S. President Donald Trump had set the reciprocal rate at 19 percent, there is still room for continued dialogue. He emphasized that these negotiations specifically target commodities crucial to the U.S. market that cannot be domestically produced.

"Yesterday, Bapak President [Prabowo Subianto] confirmed that our reciprocal tariff from Trump had been finalized at 19 percent. But, there is still scope for us to continue negotiating with them," Susiwijono stated on Friday, July 18, 2025.

Among the commodities proposed for tariff reduction to 0 percent are crude palm oil (CPO), coffee, cocoa, and nickel. Susiwijono noted that the selection of these commodities is extensive, highly competitive, and represents strategic export goods for Indonesia within the U.S. market.

He further confirmed that the negotiation process is ongoing between the Indonesian Representative Team, led by Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto, and the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) Office.

Susiwijono added that all details of the U.S.-Indonesian agreement would later be documented in a Joint Statement, which will then be publicly announced. This document is expected to outline all agreements, ranging from the confirmed Trump tariffs and the resolution of non-tariff barriers to bilateral trade and investment commitments.

"Formally, it will be in the joint statement. We have agreed, and the final documents are ready," Susiwijono affirmed.

Previously, Trump officially reduced import tariffs on Indonesian products to 19 percent, a decrease from the initial 32 percent. This decision was reached after his direct meeting with Prabowo.

"This morning, I finalized an important Deal with the Republic of Indonesia after speaking with their Highly Respected President Prabowo Subianto," Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social, on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, U.S. Time.
