Broad Market Indicators
Broad-market exchange-traded fund IWM rose while IVV declined. Actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) was down 0.7%.
US equity indexes traded mixed in midday trading on Tuesday as quarterly earnings failed to inspire investors amid the release of relatively weak macroeconomic data.
Energy
iShares US Energy ETF (IYE) and the Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) both rose about 0.2%.
Technology
Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLK) fell 1.2%; iShares US Technology ETF (IYW) and iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF (IGM) edged lower as well.
SPDR S&P Semiconductor (XSD) shed 2.3%, while iShares Semiconductor (SOXX) lost 1.8%.
Financial
Financial Select Sector SPDR (XLF) was 0.5% up. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares (FAS) climbed 1.4%, and its bearish counterpart, Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ), dropped 1.3%.
Commodities
Crude oil fell 1.4%, and the United States Oil Fund (USO) was down 1%. Natural gas declined 1.7%, and the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) dipped 1.5%.
Gold was 1.1% higher on Comex, and SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) were 0.9% up. Silver gained 0.5%, and iShares Silver Trust (SLV) rose 0.8%.
Consumer
Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR (XLP) added 0.7%; Vanguard Consumer Staples ETF (VDC) and the iShares Dow Jones US Consumer Goods (IYK) rose as well.
Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR (XLY) added 0.3%, and VanEck Retail ETF (RTH) and SPDR S&P Retail (XRT) edged higher.
Health Care
Health Care Select Sector SPDR (XLV) rose 1.5%, and iShares US Healthcare (IYH) and Vanguard Health Care ETF (VHT) were also higher. iShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) gained 2.3%.
Industrial
Industrial Select Sector SPDR (XLI) fell fractionally. Vanguard Industrials (VIS) and iShares US Industrials (IYJ) were mixed, with the latter rising 0.1%.
Cryptocurrency
In midday activity, bitcoin was up 1.9%. Among cryptocurrency ETFs, ProShares Bitcoin ETF (BITO) added 1.8%, ProShares Ether ETF (EETH) slipped 0.1%, and ProShares Bitcoin & Ether Market Cap Weight ETF (BETH) gained 1%.
