特朗普政府近期对美联储主席鲍威尔的解职施压，再次将美联储的独立性推至风口浪尖。这场被称为 “装修门”（白宫指控美联储总部翻修超支约7亿美元，每平方英尺翻新成本高达1923美元） 的争议，实则是白宫与美联储百年权力关系的缩影。
“白宫和美联储就像（家庭中）爹和妈，不可能说妈独立于爹在那管孩子（经济政策），如果父母关系不好，在管教孩子方面就会有矛盾。”资深美股分析师Chuck Li如此比喻。首先，总统提名美联储主席及理事，参议院审核，这一点上美联储不可能做到绝对独立。其次，美联储主席的任期虽然长于美国总统的任期，但是美国总统决定美联储主席是否续任。第三，不同于可随意撤换的内阁官员，美联储主席不可轻易被免掉，所以外界认为相对而言，美联储在一定程度上有独立性。
