S&P 500, NASDAQ UP EARLY AS ALPHABET OFFSETS TESLA DROP
The S&P 500 .SPX and Nasdaq .IXIC are up in early trading on Thursday as shares of Alphabet GOOGL.O gained 2.5% after the company late Wednesday hiked its capital spending plans for the year and cited demand for its cloud computing services.
On the flip side, shares of Tesla TSLA.O are falling sharply, a day after Chief Executive Elon Musk said U.S. government cuts in support for electric vehicle makers could lead to a "few rough quarters" for the company.
Tesla shares are down more than 8% in early trading.
The Dow .DJI is lower, with IBM IBM.N down about 10% after its second-quarter earnings disappointed. Shares of Honeywell HON.N also weighed on the Dow following its quarterly results.
