24日，美国全国公共广播电台（NPR）记者杰克·科比特偶然发现了美国财政部有一个“捐款偿还国债”的项目。该项目设立的29年里，通过银行转账、网络捐款等渠道募集了6730万美元。

据美国福克斯新闻网25日报道，这一鲜为人知的捐款项目由美国财政部于1996年开设，除了最初的银行转账，目前该项目还开设了网页支付、PayPal和Venmo手机应用转账等渠道吸纳捐款，目前该项目已募集6730万美元的捐款。

但报道指出，由于美国国债总额在7月25日已高达36.72万亿美元，因此这些捐款对解决美国债务问题毫无帮助。

据美国Axios新闻网记者测试，完成一次偿还美国国债的捐款需要1分20秒，按照美国国债总额和利率计算，美国国债总额在这个时间内又上升了440万美元，平均每秒增加5.5万美元。美国财政部在过去29年募集的捐款，仅够支付美国在20分钟里产生的债务。
