BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) has launched the Shark in Pakistan, bringing its hybrid pickup truck to another international market.
The Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) maker rolled out the model with its Pakistani partner Mega Motor Company (MMC) in Karachi on July 25, where it is locally named BYD Shark 6, according to an announcement today.
The plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) is available in Pakistan in a single Premium variant, with a starting price of 19,950,000 Pakistani Rupees ($70,420).
The BYD Shark is the first hybrid pickup truck available in Pakistan, equipped with BYD's DMO technology, where "O" stands for off-road and "DM" stands for dual mode.
The model marks a milestone for BYD's entry into Pakistan's new energy pickup truck market and reflects the company's commitment to enabling global green mobility with Chinese products, said Liu Xue Liang, general manager of BYD's Asia-Pacific automotive sales division.
BYD launched three models in Pakistan on August 17, 2024: the all-electric Atto 3, the Seal EV, and the hybrid Sealion 6.
In China, the Atto 3 is known as the Yuan Plus, and the Sealion 6 is known as the Song Plus DM-i.
It is worth noting that the Sealion 6 is currently unavailable on the MMC website.
On May 14, 2024, BYD launched the Shark pickup truck in Mexico, a rare move for the company to debut a new model in an overseas market.
To date, BYD has brought the model to several countries, including Brazil, Cambodia, Australia, and Peru.
In Pakistan, BYD is building a NEV factory near Karachi.
BYD plans to launch its first EV assembled in Pakistan in July or August 2026, according to a report by Reuters on July 24.
The factory will initially operate on a double-shift work schedule with an annual production capacity of 25,000 units, according to the report, which cited Danish Khaliq, BYD Pakistan's vice president of sales and strategy.
