TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Attorney General's Office (AGO) will look into reports that Mohammad Riza Chalid, a corruption suspect in the PT Pertamina oil management case, has married a member of a Malaysian royal family.
The claim was made by Boyamin Bin Saiman, Coordinator of the Indonesian Anti-Corruption Society (MAKI).
Anang Supriatna, Head of the AGO’s Legal Information Center, said that while he had heard the news through the media, his office had not received any official confirmation.
Anang assured that the AGO would investigate any new information that surfaces. “Every piece of information will be reviewed and followed up by our investigators. They will continue to coordinate with relevant parties to secure Riza Chalid's return,” he told Tempo on Monday, July 28, 2025.
In an open letter, Boyamin claimed that Riza had married a relative of a sultan from a Malaysian state, identified only by the initials J or K. He said this marriage had strengthened Riza’s position in Malaysia.
"Riza Chalid is believed to have lived in Johor, Malaysia, for some time, and there are reports suggesting he married a member of a royal family in one of the Malaysian states," Boyamin said in a written statement on Monday.
According to him, MAKI had traveled to Kuala Lumpur on July 26 and 27, 2025, in an effort to locate Riza. While they did not meet Riza in person, the group claimed to have gathered enough evidence to confirm his presence in Malaysia.
"Several sources confirmed that Riza has often stayed in Johor state, especially in Johor Bahru," Boyamin added.
He called on President Prabowo Subianto to raise the matter during his meeting with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, which is scheduled to take place later today.
“We urge President Prabowo to discuss the return of Riza Chalid during his meeting with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim,” said Boyamin.
Previously, Riza failed to respond to his first summons by the AGO on July 25, 2025. Anang confirmed that Riza provided no explanation for his absence. The businessman was named a suspect on July 10, 2025, in a corruption case involving the management of crude oil and refinery products at PT Pertamina.
A total of 18 individuals have been named as suspects in the case. Nine were identified in February 2025, and the other nine, including Riza, were named in July. His son, Muhammad Kerry Adrianto, was among those arrested in the first round.
While his son is currently in jail, Riza remains at large and is believed to be in Malaysia. The Directorate General of Immigration has confirmed his presence in the neighboring country, citing flight records from Soekarno-Hatta International Airport to Malaysia in February 2025.
The AGO plans to issue a second summons for Riza in the coming week. “The second summons will likely be scheduled next week,” Anang said on July 25.
