TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto's plan to extend the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed rail to Surabaya is currently under review by the Transportation Ministry. According to Arif Anwar, Director of Rail Traffic and Railway Transportation, the project's feasibility study has not yet been completed.

"There is a policy from the President to go there, but we are still assessing it because the FS has not been completed," Arif said at the Ministry of Transportation office on Thursday, July 31, 2025.

He added that discussions, including the determination of the route, are still ongoing. "Whoever is interested in the project can propose to build either in the north or in the south, and the feasibility study will be assessed."

The plan for the extension was initially revealed by Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY). According to AHY, Indonesia is preparing a new regulatory framework for the project.

"President Prabowo has given clear instructions to expand the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed train line to Surabaya," AHY said in Jakarta on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, as quoted by Antara.

AHY explained that the head of state's vision is to connect the island of Java with faster, cleaner, and more integrated mobility, emphasizing that "the key to this vision is to strengthen the Bandung-Surabaya corridor."

Previously, Deputy Minister of Transportation Suntana stated on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, that several companies were interested in the Jakarta-Surabaya high-speed rail project, including the operators of the existing Jakarta-Bandung high-speed train or Whoosh service.

However, Suntana did not mention the names of the interested companies. He explained that the project is considering two possible routes: a southern or a northern path on Java.
