- Xpeng has started pre-sales of the new P7 without announcing pre-sales pricing, saying it aims to officially launch the model later this month.
- The new P7 comes standard with three Turing AI driving chips, has a range of up to 820 km, and uses some of Xpeng's humanoid robot technologies.
Xpeng (NYSE: XPEV) has debuted its next-generation P7 electric sedan, aiming to create another blockbuster model by equipping it with in-house developed smart driving chip, long battery range, and a sleek new design.
The Chinese electric vehicle (EV) maker introduced the new P7 at an event in Beijing today and began pre-sales of the electric sedan.
Xpeng did not disclose the pre-sales pricing, saying that it aims to officially launch the model later this month, at which time the prices will be available. The new P7 show cars are available in Xpeng showrooms starting today.
The company previously said that the next-generation P7 targets a market segment priced around RMB 300,000 ($41,750). However, its starting price will clearly not exceed RMB 300,000, considering that its other mid-to-large-sized electric sedan, the P7+, has a starting price range of RMB 186,800 to RMB 208,800.
Customers who pay RMB 99 to reserve the new P7 now will receive a RMB 3,000 discount when paying for the vehicle.
Shortly after the debut event for the new P7, Xpeng announced on Weibo that the model had received over 10,000 pre-orders within 6 minutes and 37 seconds of the start of pre-sales.
The first-generation P7 debuted at the Shanghai auto show in April 2019 and was officially launched in April 2020. Deliveries began in the middle of 2020.
As Xpeng's first sedan, the P7's stylish exterior design has earned it a good reputation since its launch.
The P7 delivered 60,569 and 59,066 units in 2021 and 2022, respectively, contributing 61.71 percent and 48.91 percent of Xpeng's annual deliveries, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.
In March 2023, Xpeng rolled out the P7i sedan as the successor to the P7, although the standard P7 continued to be sold for some time.
The P7+ launched in November 2024 is a completely new model, not a facelift of the P7 series. The P7+ focuses on family use with more space, while the new P7 offers more comprehensive and personalized intelligence and performance, according to Xpeng.
The new-generation P7 measures 5,017 mm in length, 1,970 mm in width, and 1,427 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,008 mm.
It comes standard with three Turing AI driving chip developed in-house by Xpeng, with an effective computing power of 2,250 TOPS.
This is the same as the company's G7 SUV (sport utility vehicle) in its highest-priced Ultra variant, the highest smart driving computing power to date.
In these two models, two Turing chips are used for smart driving and one for driving cabin services.
With this computing power, the new P7 supports VLA (Vision-Language-Action) and VLM (Vision-Language Models) large language AI models.
The VLA large model enables vehicles to think proactively and respond to a variety of driving scenarios, such as actively deciding on the best route.
The VLM large model brings a brand-new intelligent cockpit experience, capable of actively sensing and providing services.
The new P7 is built on an 800-volt high-voltage platform and equipped with battery packs supporting a 5C charging rate, enabling a range of 525 kilometers in just 10 minutes of charging.
The model has three range options: 702 km, 750 km, and 820 km.
It has single-motor and dual-motor options, with the more powerful dual-motor version capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.7 seconds.
The new P7 is equipped with a dual-chamber air suspension system that provides the low ground clearance of a luxury sports car.
Xpeng has also used a movable center console screen for the first time, which incorporates some of the technology used in its humanoid robot Iron.
The new P7 is one of multiple new models launched by Xpeng this year and is expected to continue its strong sales momentum.
The next important factors will be the price of the model and whether Chinese consumers will accept the unique design of the new P7.
The company has updated its G6 SUV, G9 SUV, and X9 MPV (multi-purpose vehicle) this year and launched a new SUV, the G7.
Meanwhile, the strong performance of the Mona M03 and P7+ electric sedans launched last year has continued into this year.
Xpeng delivered a record 36,717 vehicles in July, marking the ninth consecutive month of monthly deliveries exceeding 30,000 units since November 2024.
This brings its deliveries for January-July to 233,906 vehicles, representing a year-on-year increase of 270.26 percent.
The company aims to double its delivery volume in 2025 compared to 2024, which appears to be easily achievable.
In the first half of this year, its delivery volume reached 197,189 vehicles, up 279.01 percent year-on-year, surpassing its total delivery volume of 190,068 vehicles for the entire year of 2024.
