美国时间周一上午约 10：50，位于宾夕法尼亚州 Clairton、距匹兹堡东南约 15 英里的 U.S. Steel Clairton Coke Works 发生爆炸，现场腾起浓烟。官方称两人遇难（其中一人先失联后确认身亡），另有 10 人送医（5 人已出院、5 人重伤但情况稳定），更多轻伤者在现场接受处置。

　　应急部门表示先后出现一次主爆炸及数次次生爆炸，近三十余家急救与消防机构到场；当晚附近居民的“就地避护”建议已解除。美国钢铁公司（U.S. Steel） 称厂区于下午 4 时左右保持稳定，已着手事故调查，包括员工访谈与外部专家介入；化学安全委员会（CSB）派出调查组。公司高管称爆炸发生在两座焦炉电池之间；有员工表示爆炸前曾响起焦炉煤气泄漏报警，部分人员因此得以撤离。

　　该厂地处莫诺加希拉河畔，历史 120 余年、员工约 1300 人，负责将煤高温炼制成焦炭，为美钢位于 Braddock（近郊）及印第安纳州 Gary 的高炉供料；公司称部分焦炉电池仍在运行，可有限度产出。Clairton 厂曾于 2018 年平安夜发生重大火灾，随后数周在周边 22 个市镇引发空气健康警示；2010 年亦发生爆炸致 20 人受伤。该厂隶属 Mon Valley Works，按今年日本制铁收购美钢的计划，园区将获逾 20 亿美元的设备升级与检修。事故原因与损害评估尚待进一步调查。
