Applied Materials Is Losing Share in Chips Business -- Market Talk

Dow Jones

11:08 -- Applied Materials' weak fourth-quarter outlook is a sign that the company may be losing share in the semiconductor industry, says Bank of America analyst Vivek Arya, who downgrades the stock to neutral. The company said it was seeing uneven demand from customers as a result of economic uncertainty, but Arya says the slowdown may be specific to Applied Materials. Some of its competitors are taking share of the wafer fabrication equipment business, particularly in foundry/logic, while Applied Materials may have high exposure to sluggish product categories, such as over-supplied mature node semiconductors. Shares are down 12% to $164.73. (nicholas.miller@wsj.com)
