US STOCKS KICK OFF THE WEEK RUNNING IN PLACE

Wall Street's main indexes are flat to slightly down early on Monday in a quiet start to a week packed with corporate earnings reports from major retailers and the Federal Reserve's annual symposium in Jackson Hole.

Investors will closely monitor reports from Walmart WMT.N, Home Depot HD.N and Target TGT.N among others, which are expected this week, to determine how trade uncertainty and inflation expectations have affected U.S. consumers.

Market players are also remaining wary ahead of a meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelenskiy on Kyiv's conflict with Moscow. Trump has told Ukraine to give up hopes of getting back the annexed Crimea or joining NATO, but will push for a peace deal with Russia.

A majority of S&P 500 index .SPX sectors are lower, though overall, changes are relatively modest. Energy .SPNY, off around 0.9%, is taking the biggest hit.

Defensive groups are posting the biggest gains. Healthcare .SPXHC, which is up 0.5%, is the leading gainer.

Meanwhile, the Dow .DJI is down just 0.23% from its December 4, 2024 record close. Thus, despite muted early trade, the blue-chip average is easily within striking distance of scoring its first record close of 2025.

The SPX has seen 18 record finishes this year, while the Nasdaq .IXIC has scored 20.
