When Is Debt A Problem?

Debt assists a business until the business has trouble paying it off, either with new capital or with free cash flow. In the worst case scenario, a company can go bankrupt if it cannot pay its creditors. However, a more usual (but still expensive) situation is where a company must dilute shareholders at a cheap share price simply to get debt under control. Of course, plenty of companies use debt to fund growth, without any negative consequences. The first thing to do when considering how much debt a business uses is to look at its cash and debt together.

How Much Debt Does Auckland International Airport Carry?

The image below, which you can click on for greater detail, shows that Auckland International Airport had debt of NZ$2.49b at the end of June 2025, a reduction from NZ$2.71b over a year. However, it does have NZ$567.8m in cash offsetting this, leading to net debt of about NZ$1.92b.

A Look At Auckland International Airport's Liabilities

The latest balance sheet data shows that Auckland International Airport had liabilities of NZ$636.1m due within a year, and liabilities of NZ$2.95b falling due after that. Offsetting these obligations, it had cash of NZ$567.8m as well as receivables valued at NZ$90.5m due within 12 months. So its liabilities outweigh the sum of its cash and (near-term) receivables by NZ$2.93b.

Auckland International Airport has a market capitalization of NZ$12.8b, so it could very likely raise cash to ameliorate its balance sheet, if the need arose. But it's clear that we should definitely closely examine whether it can manage its debt without dilution.

We measure a company's debt load relative to its earnings power by looking at its net debt divided by its earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) and by calculating how easily its earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) cover its interest expense (interest cover). For example, its EBIT growth rate is relatively strong. It's also worth noting that Auckland International Airport is in the Infrastructure industry, which is often considered to be quite defensive. Looking at all the angles mentioned above, it does seem to us that Auckland International Airport is a somewhat risky investment as a result of its debt. That's not necessarily a bad thing, since leverage can boost returns on equity, but it is something to be aware of. There's no doubt that we learn most about debt from the balance sheet.
