Walmart Factored Amazon's Grocery Expansion into its Plans -- Market Talk

1006 ET - Walmart has been preparing for its largest competitor, Amazon.com, to go after a larger share of the grocery business for some time. "I've been doing this for a long time now, and competition just keeps getting better," CEO Doug McMillon says on a call with analysts when asked about the recent expansion of Amazon's grocery-delivery business. "That's factored into our plan… We expect (the competition) to get better and the best to get stronger, and that means that we've got to keep doing the same thing." Walmart notes that its food business had a particularly strong quarter, gaining market share as the company increased its number of discounts across the unit. "Our rollback count in grocery was up 30% in the quarter compared to last year," McMillon says. (connor.hart@wsj.com)
