Telefonica's Capital Increase Likely to Improve Financial Flexibility -- Market Talk

0800 GMT - Telefonica's potential capital increase could strengthen its finances, ING analyst Jan Frederik Slijkerman writes in a note. According to Spanish digital newspaper Vozpopuli, the Spanish telecommunication company is considering a capital raise with backing from key shareholders, he says. While the company's recent results were disappointing, the move would improve financial flexibility and credit metrics, the analyst says. However, it is unclear if the potential capital increase would be large enough to boost credit metrics or fund a possible acquisition of Liberty Global's 50% stake in Virgin Media O2, he adds. Shares are down 0.95% at 4.61 euros. (najat.kantouar@wsj.com)
