Sony Group (TYO:6758) is banking on Japanese movie production as Hollywood faces a downturn in sequel performance, Nikkei Asia reported on Wednesday, citing a company official.

The group's film production unit, Sony Pictures Entertainment Japan (SPEJ), is set to produce and distribute a record eight domestic films in 2025, the report said, citing Daisuke Kadoya, head of SPEJ's international productions.

"We're selecting projects with enough entertainment value to target at least 1 billion yen in box office revenue," Kadoya reportedly said.
