Meituan's Food Delivery Suffers Loss But Retains Market Lead for Now -- Market Talk

0418 GMT - Meituan's food delivery unit is expected to suffer a CNY18.8 billion loss in 3Q, though that's likely to narrow to a CNY5.1 billion loss in 4Q, according to Nomura analysts Jialong Shi and Rachel Guo. Though the food delivery giant is predicted to remain China's largest player, its dominance is likely to diminish due to competitor Alibaba's investments that raised its order volume to 70%-80% of Meituan's. The analysts say Meituan's gross transaction value is expected to retain its lead at 58% market share at end-2025, versus Alibaba's 28%. However, Nomura notes Meituan is still engaged in a subsidies war with Alibaba, though competition may have peaked in 3Q. Nomura cuts Meituan's target price to HK$123 from HK$176 but maintains a Buy rating; they were recently at HK99.90.(jason.chau@wsj.com)
