EchoStar Spectrum Sales Will Hurt Broadband -- Market Talk

Dow Jones

1212 ET - EchoStar's spectrum sales will add additional pressure to the cable broadband industry, JPMorgan analysts say. Wireless companies' broader spectrum portfolios will drive more fixed wireless access subscribers, which it can eventually convert to fiber connection subscribers. AT&T will be able to use the spectrum it acquired from EchoStar to open new markets to fixed wireless access, offer more access in markets that it will eventually convert to fiber and retain customers in markets that won't receive fiber connection long-term. EchoStar will eventually sell its remaining spectrum to wireless carriers following an FCC spectrum auction next year, the analysts say. (nicholas.miller@wsj.com)
