General Mills is scheduled to report fiscal first-quarter results before the market opens Wednesday. Here is what you need to know.

SALES: The maker of Trix cereal and Nature Valley granola bars is expected to post $4.52 billion in sales for the recent quarter, below the $4.85 billion it notched in the same period last year, according to FactSet.

NET INCOME: Wall Street projects the Minneapolis company to report $445.3 million in net income, compared with $579.9 million a year earlier.

ADJUSTED EARNINGS: Stripping out certain one-time costs, quarterly earnings are projected to come in at 81 cents a share. That is down from $1.07 a share a year earlier.

The stock is down 7.6% over the past three months and was recently trading at $49.06.

WHAT TO WATCH

-- General Mills said it will lean on new product launches, increased marketing efforts and lower prices this year in an effort to return to volume-led sales growth. Investors and analysts have been skeptical about whether this strategy will succeed, though, and they will be looking at whether or not sales volumes improved during the recent quarter.

-- There are a few green shoots driving growth across the packaged-food industry, as consumers are gravitating to protein-packed products and all-natural foods with bold and spicy flavors, General Mills Chief Financial Officer Kofi Bruce said earlier this month at a conference. The company said it would lean into these trends for its new products, supported by increased marketing and lower prices. Investors will be looking for insight into how General Mills' new products are selling, as well as how higher investments in promotion and price are affecting its bottom line.

-- Consumers are cooking at home more often, and they have broadly cut back on buying snacks amid a tough economic environment. These trends are creating a bifurcation in General Mills' business, boosting sales of pantry staples such as beans, broth and rice, while hurting sales of Chex Mix snack mix and Bugles corn chips. Investors will be looking for any insights into the status of these trends, as well as their effect on business.
