Don't Expect a Rapid End to Shutdown -- Market Talk

Dow Jones
Yesterday

0909 ET - The government shutdown could well persist at least through much of this week and perhaps beyond, economists at Goldman Sachs write. They note that prediction markets show 85% probability that the shutdown, which began Oct. 1, will last at least 10 days. Goldman's team speculates that momentum to reopen the government could build again next week, with a military pay date of Oct. 15 likely to force legislators' attention. Only after the government reopens would U.S. stats agencies begin preparing a backlog of missing economic data for release. (matt.grossman@wsj.com; @mattgrossman)
