Health-care companies ticked up amid hopes that a troubled period for the health-insurance niche has passed.

Shares of UnitedHealth Group rose, trimming losses for the year to date to roughly 27%, roughly halving the deficit from their nadir.

President Trump signaled a willingness to strike a deal on funding health-care subsidies demanded by Democrats, putting a spotlight on nascent efforts on Capitol Hill to end the government shutdown.

Supreme Court justices voiced skepticism about state bans on counseling that aim to change a young patient's sexual orientation or gender identity.
