Dog Food Category Seen With Slew of Volume Headwinds -- Market Talk

1458 ET - The dog food category is contending with a slew of volume headwinds that have led to slower sales growth, across all sub-categories, compared to cat food providers, BofA Securities analysts say in a note. Pet adoption trends have declined as a whole but skewed more toward dogs than cats, the analysts say. At the same time, small and medium sized dogs are getting adopted at a higher rate than larger dogs, weighing on dog food volumes, they say. Those category trends make for a tough setup for companies like Freshpet, which also faces potential share losses as new players enter the category, they say. (kelly.cloonan@wsj.com)
