Bassett Furniture swung to a profit in its fiscal third quarter as revenue rose 5.9%, driven by new products, more aggressive marketing and its online business.

The furniture manufacturer and retailer on Wednesday reported a profit of $801,000, or 9 cents a share, for the quarter ended Aug. 30, compared to a loss of $4.5 million, or 52 cents a share, in the same quarter a year earlier.

Sales increased to $80.1 million from $75.6 million, rising 6.2% at wholesale and 9.8% at the retail level.

In July, the company raised wholesale prices 5% in response to tariffs on materials it buys from Vietnam and India.

Bassett Chief Executive Robert Spilman said that the results came as the company continues to adjust to a difficult supply chain environment. He added that the company's U.S. manufacturing base allows the company to serve both its wholesale and retail customers with custom furniture and design services.

The Bassett, Va., company has now posted a profit in four straight quarters. Last year, the company launched a restructuring plan after a string of quarterly losses, with the goal of reducing costs and withstanding slowing demand for its furniture.
