从1955年到1974年，得益于战后汽车业的繁荣和美国制造业的主导地位，通用汽车稳居《财富》美国500强榜首。期内，通用汽车的营收从98亿美元飙升至358亿美元。
随后，埃克森美孚在20世纪70年代和80年代成为新的领导者。能源危机期间油价飙升推动了这家石油巨头的领先地位，并在接下来的二十年里与通用汽车频繁交替占据榜首位置。
值得注意的是，《财富》美国500强榜单在1995年之前仅包含美国工业公司，1995年之后金融和服务公司也开始被纳入排名。
2002年，沃尔玛跃升为美国营收最高的公司。到2025年，沃尔玛的营收几乎增长了两倍，超过6800亿美元。
