美联储研究人员指出，截至2024年底，开曼群岛对冲基金持有的美国国债规模可能比美国官方报告的高出约1.4万亿美元。
在美联储10月15日发布的一份报告中，Daniel Barth和Daniel Beltran等研究人员提到，这些基金的持仓在去年12月已达到1.85万亿美元，自2022年至今已增加1万亿美元。而美国财政部此前报告的数据仅为4230亿美元。
研究人员表示，开曼群岛目前是美国最大的海外债权人，规模已超过中国、日本和英国。
他们分析认为，这一差异可能是因为官方数据未能完整捕捉与基差交易相关的操作。在该策略中，对冲基金会做空美国国债期货，同时买入现货国债，利用两者之间的价差获利。报告进一步说明，这些基金将购入的美国国债作为抵押品，通过回购协议市场融资，从而支撑基差交易的进行。
美债被用作抵押品，其所有权就可能更难被追踪。研究人员指出，在托管机构的记录中，这些债券可能显示为已出售，但实际上其所有权可能仍然归属于对冲基金。（国际财闻汇）
