Here's a clear sign of rising investor nerves.

The Cboe Volatility Index jumped 23% Thursday to close at its highest since April, when President Trump's tariff plans were roiling markets.

The index, known as the VIX, rose another 9% early on Friday, to stand at about 27.5.

The VIX tracks expectations for stock swings over the next 30 days, based on what investors will pay for options tied to the S&P 500 index.
