Sector Update: Energy Stocks Softer Tuesday Afternoon

Energy stocks edged down Tuesday afternoon, with the NYSE Energy Sector Index easing 0.2% and the Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLE) 0.1% lower.

The Philadelphia Oil Service Sector Index gained 2.3%, while the Dow Jones US Utilities Index fell 1.1%.

West Texas Intermediate crude oil rose 0.7% to $57.91 a barrel, and global benchmark Brent advanced 0.6% to $61.36 a barrel. Henry Hub natural gas futures climbed 0.9% to $3.44 per 1 million BTU.

In corporate news, CenterPoint Energy (CNP) shares fell 1.1% after it said Tuesday it will sell its Ohio natural gas local distribution company, Vectren Energy Delivery of Ohio, to National Fuel Gas (NFG) for $2.62 billion. National Fuel Gas shares dropped 4%.

Chevron (CVX) and Shell (SHEL) are among the oil majors that have reduced oil and gas production at Kazakhstan's Karachaganak field after a Ukrainian drone strike damaged a gas processing plant in Russia, Reuters reported. Chevron shares were up 0.2%, and Shell was 0.1% higher.

Venture Global (VG) has asked the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission for permission to introduce natural gas by Thursday into the final block of its Plaquemines LNG facility in Louisiana, Reuters reported late Monday, citing a regulatory filing. Venture shares were up 3.9%.
