Community Health Shares Rise After Swinging to 3Q Profit

Shares of Community Health Systems climbed after the company swung to a surprise profit in the third quarter.

The stock rose 19% to $3.89 in midday trading Friday. Shares are up 30% since the beginning of the year, despite having slipped almost 3% over the past 52 weeks.

The company, which provides healthcare and outpatient services, late Thursday reported a profit of $130 million, or 96 cents a share, compared with a loss of $355 million, or $2.95 a share, a year earlier.

Stripping out certain one-time items, adjusted earnings were $1.27 a share. Analysts surveyed by FactSet had expected an adjusted loss of 25 cents.

Revenue was flat at $3.09 billion, ahead of the $2.99 billion that Wall Street had modeled.
