But at least the stock is up over the last five years.  In that time, it is up 80%, which isn't bad, but is below the market return of 82%.      After a strong gain in the past week, it's worth seeing if longer term returns have been driven by improving fundamentals. While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance.  One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.   During the five years of share price growth, EVT moved from a loss to profitability.   That would generally be considered a positive, so we'd hope to see the share price to rise. When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs.  Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock.  In the case of EVT, it has a TSR of 98% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned.  The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.  A Different Perspective It's nice to see that EVT shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 35% over the last year.   Of course, that includes the dividend.     That's better than the annualised return of 15% over half a decade, implying that the company is doing better recently.  In the best case scenario, this may hint at some real business momentum, implying that now could be a great time to delve deeper.        I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
