Exchange-Traded Funds Rise as US Equities Trend Higher After Midday

Broad Market Indicators

Broad-market exchange-traded funds IWM and IVV rose. Actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) was down 1.6%.

US benchmark equity indexes rose in midday trading on Wednesday as gains in communication services helped push the Nasdaq Composite higher, a respite after the sell-off in the previous trading session.

Energy

iShares US Energy ETF (IYE) and the Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) each added 1.1%.

Technology

Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLK) gained 0.9%; iShares US Technology ETF (IYW) and iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF (IGM) also advanced.

SPDR S&P Semiconductor (XSD) was up 2.6%, and iShares Semiconductor (SOXX) rose 3.2%.

Financial

The Financial Select Sector SPDR (XLF) rose 0.7%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares (FAS) added 2%, and its bearish counterpart, Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ), slipped 1.8%.

Commodities

Crude oil dipped 1.2%, and the United States Oil Fund (USO) shed 1.1%. Natural gas dropped 1.7%, and the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) was down 2%.

Gold on Comex rose 0.8%, and SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) added 1.1%. Silver gained 1.6%, and iShares Silver Trust (SLV) was up 2.3%.

Consumer

Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR (XLP) rose 0.2%. The Vanguard Consumer Staples ETF (VDC) and iShares Dow Jones US Consumer Goods (IYK) were up as well.

Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR (XLY) climbed 1.1%. VanEck Retail ETF (RTH) was up 0.5%, and SPDR S&P Retail (XRT) advanced 2.8%.

Health Care

Health Care Select Sector SPDR (XLV) was up 0.6%, and iShares US Healthcare (IYH) and Vanguard Health Care ETF (VHT) rose as well; iShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) was up 1.7%.

Industrial

Industrial Select Sector SPDR (XLI) added 0.9%. Vanguard Industrials Index Fund (VIS) and iShares US Industrials (IYJ) advanced as well.

Cryptocurrency

In midday activity, bitcoin (BTC-USD) added 3.1%. Among cryptocurrency ETFs, ProShares Bitcoin ETF (BITO) gained 3.3%, ProShares Ether ETF (EETH) climbed 6.9%, and ProShares Bitcoin & Ether Market Cap Weight ETF (BETH) was up 4.1%.
