美国总统特朗普多次声称，孩子患自闭症与孕妇服用常见止痛药扑热息痛之间存在关联。英国医学期刊《英国医学杂志》近日发表针对这个议题的所有现有科学研究总览性综述，由英国学者主导的研究团队在综述中指出：“现有证据并未显示，后代患自闭症及注意力缺陷多动障碍(ADHD)，与在胎儿期间接触扑热息痛之间存在明确关联。”此前多项研究曾暗示，自闭症或ADHD与扑热息痛有关。不过，上述综述表明，这些研究质量较低甚至极低，部分原因在于未能充分排除潜在干扰因素，如家族自闭症史。这些有争议的早期研究，也未能确证扑热息痛导致自闭症的确切机制。
