Canadians Look Set to Keep Christmas Spending In Check -- Market Talk

1059 ET - Canadians aren't feeling particularly jolly and are likely to cut back on their spending this holiday season, a poll suggests. Harris & Partners' survey of 1,820 respondents finds households are entering Christmas with caution. It shows that 61% of Canadians don't feel financial prepared for the holidays, and 72% plan to cut back on spending compared with last year. As well, 54% say they feel anxious about affording the holidays, and 83% intend to set a strict budget. Only 14% expect to borrow or use credit for Christmas. And the shift in behavior may extend beyond Christmas, the insolvency trustee firm says. "Rising living costs and higher interest rates are driving families to scale back on gifts, simplify celebrations, and prioritize experiences over excess." (robb.stewart@wsj.com; @RobbMStewart)
