BMW Outlook Uncertain With Limited Detail on Earnings Drivers -- Market Talk

1327 GMT - BMW's third-quarter report had elements that were encouraging, but the limited detail on certain earnings drivers makes the outlook uncertain, HSBC analysts write. Several hundred million euros of free-cash-flow headwind haven't yet been explained by the company, the bank says. It is also unclear to what degree a 900 million-euro tailwind attributed to manufacturing and material cost savings is repeatable. BMW's peers have explicit plans to address low margins, with most cutting headcount, HSBC says. However, despite delivering auto margins that are below its strategic range of 8%-10%, BMW hasn't really mapped out the path back to that level. "As it stands, we see auto margins languishing in the 5%-7% range for the next few years." Shares rise 1% to 87 euros. (dominic.chopping@wsj.com)
