多名熟悉公司内部讨论的人士透露，苹果董事会和高层管理人员近期加速了相关准备工作，以迎接库克卸任。苹果硬件工程高级副总裁约翰·特纳斯（John Ternus）被普遍视为库克最有可能的接任者，但尚未作出最终决定。
接近苹果的人士表示，这项筹备已久的交接并非因公司当前业绩，苹果今年年底的iPhone销售季预计将非常亮眼。如果在明年年初公布接班人人选，新的领导团队将有时间在苹果的重要年度活动前站稳脚跟，包括6月的开发者大会（WWDC）和9月的iPhone发布会。
