As it happens, Mermaid Maritime issued 34% more new shares over the last year.  That means its earnings are split among a greater number of shares.  To talk about net income, without noticing earnings per share, is to be distracted by the big numbers while ignoring the smaller numbers that talk to per share value. Advertisement A Look At The Impact Of Mermaid Maritime's Dilution On Its Earnings Per Share (EPS)  Mermaid Maritime was losing money three years ago.    On the bright side, in the last twelve months it grew profit by 10%.   But EPS was less impressive, and was pretty much flat over that time.      Therefore, one can observe that the dilution is having a fairly profound effect on shareholder returns.   Changes in the share price do tend to reflect changes in earnings per share, in the long run.  So Mermaid Maritime shareholders will want to see that EPS figure continue to increase.   But on the other hand, we'd be far less excited to learn profit (but not EPS) was improving.
