Nike 'Sustainable' Polo Shirt Ad Ruled Misleading, Ordered Removed by UK Regulator

Nike (NKE) has been ordered by a UK regulator Wednesday to remove an advertisement posted on Google that makes claims about the environmental sustainability of its tennis polo shirts.

The Advertising Standards Authority said a Nike ad that aired online at least once this year claimed that the shirts use "sustainable materials," which the regulator described as misleading.

Nike claimed that its 2025 tennis polo shirts contained at least 75% recycled materials and thus qualified for the "sustainable materials" banner.

But the regulator said that the claim "sustainable materials and did not include qualifying information explaining the basis of the term sustainable," and that the company failed to show that the "shirts had no detrimental effect on the environment."
