Ashland shares rose after Standard Investments reported it had taken a 5.7% stake in the chemicals company.
Shares were up 9.4% to $57.36 in Monday morning trading. The stock has fallen roughly 20% in the past year.
Standard Investments said it had bought roughly 2.6 million Ashland shares for $133 million on Nov. 21, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Standard also said it entered into cash settled total return swaps equivalent to 1.9 million shares, or 4.2% of outstanding shares, giving the investment firm economic exposure to about 9.9% of Ashland's total outstanding shares.
