We also note that the stock has performed poorly over the last year, with the share price down 45%.     The falls have accelerated recently, with the share price down 18% in the last three months.      If the past week is anything to go by, investor sentiment for ARN Media isn't positive, so let's see if there's a mismatch between fundamentals and the share price.  Trump has pledged to \"unleash\" American oil and gas and these 15 US stocks have developments that are poised to benefit.  In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business.  By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.   ARN Media has made a profit in the past.    However, it made a loss in the last twelve months, suggesting profit may be an unreliable metric at this stage.   Other metrics may better explain the share price move.  The steady dividend doesn't really explain why the share price is down.   It's not immediately clear to us why the stock price is down but further research might provide some answers. As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR).  Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off.  Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock.  As it happens, ARN Media's TSR for the last 5 years was -72%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier.  And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!  A Different Perspective While the broader market gained around 7.0% in the last year, ARN Media shareholders lost 42% (even including dividends).  However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period.     Regrettably, last year's performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 11% per year over five years.  Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround.
