The U.S. could hike tariffs or take other trade action against the European Union if the 27-nation bloc does not stop imposing fines on American tech companies, the U.S. trade chief said on Tuesday.

"If the EU and EU Member States insist on continuing to restrict, limit, and deter the competitiveness of U.S. service providers through discriminatory means, the United States will have no choice but to begin using every tool at its disposal to counter these unreasonable measures," U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer posted on the social media platform X.

He listed nine European firms that he said have enjoyed "expansive market access" in the U.S., including Spotify, Siemens, Accenture and others.

The post comes days after EU regulators levied a $140 million fine against X-owned by billionaire Trump ally Elon Musk -for breaching content rules. The two governments have long been at loggerheads over EU tech regulations. The subject was left unresolved in a trade pact that they secured this July in Scotland, which lowered U.S. tariffs on most European goods to 15%.
