South Korean Consumer Confidence Ebbs in December

South Korea's consumer confidence index ebbed moderately in November due to concerns about the domestic economy, but remained in generally positive territory, the Bank of Korea reported on Wednesday.

The nation's Composite Consumer Sentiment Index (CCSI) for December logged at 109.9, down from 112.4 in November, but still above the 100-mark that separates consumer optimism from pessimism, reported the Bank of Korea, citing its monthly survey.

However, South Koreans were less positive about the state of the nation's economy and its outlook.

"Consumer sentiment concerning current domestic economic conditions was 89, seven points lower than that in November, and that concerning future domestic economic conditions was 96, six points lower than that in the previous month," reported the Bank of Korea.

While consumers are pessimistic regarding the national economy, the central bank recently estimated the nation's gross domestic product (GDP) will expand by 1% on year in 2025, and then by 1.8% in 2026.

Despite concerns, South Korean consumers expect to keep loosening their wallets, with the prospective household spending index striking 110 in December, unchanged from November, reported the Bank of Korea.

South Korean consumers expected inflation in the next 12 months to run at 2.6% and to log at 2.5% annually for the next five years. The Bank of Korea has a 2% annual inflation target.

The Bank of Korea polled nearly 2,300 households from Dec. 9 through Dec. 16 for the consumer survey.
