Fujitsu Ltd. expects to see expansion in its defense-related business as the Japanese government is increasing defense spending in such areas as Self-Defense Forces equipment, CEO Takahito Tokita said during an interview with The Yomiuri Shimbun.
"The role of AI, quantum and other advanced technologies in national security will certainly grow. I believe Fujitsu's responsibility will also increase," Tokita said.
Fujitsu handles defense equipment in communications devices, as well as information and communications systems and other areas.
"We will continue our efforts to ensure our added value is recognized," Tokita said.
Citing the partnership announced in May with Lockheed Martin Corp., under which Fujitsu supplies radar components, Tokita expressed an intention for the company to collaborate domestically or internationally if it finds economic rationale in doing so.
Regarding Rapidus Corp., a Japanese company aiming to domestically produce advanced semiconductors, Tokita said, "We are aware (Fujitsu) is one of the few domestic users of their products and will support them."
"It is extremely important for there to be a production base (for advanced semiconductors) within the nation. We prefer to use domestically produced (chips), so we expect their performance to continue improving," Tokita said.
As for investing in Rapidus, he said, "We will help, but nothing has been decided."
The interview was conducted on Monday.
