0838 ET - U.S. natural gas futures are lower on the first trading day of the year as recent weather forecasts show a substantial loss of heating demand for the first half of January. "Still, meteorologists insist very cold weather remains on tap for the back half of January," Eli Rubin of EBW Analytics says in a note. If the cold materializes, prices can still move higher with more than half of winter still ahead, he adds.Nymex natural gas is down 1.6% at $3.625/mmBtu. (anthony.harrup@wsj.com)
