Toyota Motor Corp. has announced that its bZ4X SUV topped the domestic new EV sales chart in Japan for the October-December period, with 3,448 units sold.
This marks the first time the company has taken the top spot on a quarterly basis.
The bZ4X underwent a partial upgrade in October, with its maximum range extended to 746 kilometers, and its price was also lowered. It is said that the model can effectively be purchased for around 3.5 million yen if subsidies and other benefits are applied. Orders for the revamped model had reached about 11,000 units by the end of December.
While Nissan Motor Co. had been the leader in domestic EV sales, Toyota and Honda Motor Co. have grown their presence in the market through the introduction of new models. This year, China's BYD plans to launch its electric kei cars in the Japanese market, likely invigorating the sector.
